Locating untamed neon signs in the wild!

If you are of a certain age, neon signs would certainly hold a special place in your heart. Throw in some moving lights and they were even better. Who didnt enjoy seeing an old Holiday Inn sign with the lighted arrow pointing the way and starburst above or the orange and turquoise neon luster of Howard Johnsons. I also loved the Arbys cowboy hat outlined in lightbulbs. None of these were dangerous nor objectionable.

Unfortunately, too many zoning, sign, and building codes around the country have placed onerous restrictions on such lighting for signs, especially the moving varieties. During my planning career, I had to begrudgingly enforce some of these rules. Today, I look back and wonder why we as a profession were/are so hellbent on obliterating such a fun and unique form of signage. We all can agree that signs with intense glare or overly brightly flashing aspects should be limited, but neon rows of lit lightbulbs

Instead, today were are now left with millions of bland rectangular boxes on a stick or on a pedestal. How does making all signs look alike improve community ascetics How does it help a customer find a business I can think of many times where were had trouble locating a restaurant among a sea of cookie-cutter signs that look like they were spit out of an assembly line. Does everything have to be so same

Well, despite the many laws that restrict or tame the use of neon signs, there are still a fair number of places to see/enjoy them untamed in the wild. Here are some examples that have been seen across the country. If there are others, please feel free to pass them along. Peace!

• Reno especially near casinos or along Virginia Avenue

• Laughlin, Nevada

• Nashville especially in downtowns

• Pueblo, Colorado in
