Star Fox Adventures: Solid GameCube Outing Has Fun
Star Fox Adventures launched on the GameCube back in 2002. We didnt play it 24 years ago due to middling contemporary reviews (although some were a bit stronger) and didnt get the chance to play it. UNTIL NOW!
This week, in September of 2026, Nintendo re-released it on its digital classics platform. Thusly, it gave us a chance to dive on into this action-adventure romp and see what this was all about.
A Surprising Amount of Dinosaurs in Star Fox Adventures
Importantly, this was developed by the British developer Rare. Back in the 1990s and early 2000s, the developer had a unique partnership with Nintendo and only produced games for Nintendo consoles.
It launched on September 23rd 2002 and was Rares only game for the GameCube console. Microsoft had acquired the developer for itself and Rare hasnt made a game for Nintendo since.
However, the key Rare staff that made it such a stunning force in the 1990s had moved on. So Microsoft was, essentially, buying a different developer. And this really shows in Star Fox Adventures.
It has the hallmarks of a classic 90s Rare game just without being anywhere near as good.
The game is largely a third-person action-adventure experience. You take control of Fox McCloud eight years after the events of Lylat Wars (recently remade as ). You must save a cat-woman thing called Krystal from a mysterious curse by investing Dinosaur Planet, using Krystals lost magic staff as a weapon, and then going around exploring and uncovering secrets.
It plays out like the spiritual successor to . That with occasional flourishes from Nintendos Legend of Zelda series, with a bit of Star Fox lore thrown in as well.
Above is it running on the Switch 2 (seems to have had a bit of a graphics rejig for this re-release). The game certainly looks great, theres a really fancy water effect we love.
To our DELIGHT, we soon realised it also features one of . He worked with Ben Cullum on this one and it has all the familiar 90s Rare music hallmarks.
It can be a bit samey, not his best work, but the usual Wise hallmarks are there of catchy hooks that lend fine atmospherics to the various regions you visit.
Away from that, our general issue with Star Fox Adventures is its just very middling.
This is past-peak Rare and not the same developer that created so many era-defining blockbuster titles in the 1990s. It was actually Nintendos idea for the action-adventure focus, with resident genius Shigeru Miyamoto suggesting the concept when Star Fox creator Takaya Imamura wanted to make a Lylat Wars sequel.
Rare had randomly been working on a new game called Dinosaur Planet, which Miyamoto saw when it was demoed at the gaming event E3 2000. The two companies then agreed Rare would adapt it into a Star Fox game.
The outcome was a game that promised a lot, but the execution is lacking. Its not a bad game at all, but the core problems are cumbersome controls and a disappointing and plodding action-adventure centrepiece. Theres just too much plodding around, lifting up rocks for money, gradually collecting money, lifting more rocks, hitting some enemies etc. etc.
This is from the same developer that wowed the only four years earlier. In comparison, Adventures is a flat pancake of generic stuff.
It highlighted Nintendo had nothing to fear in 2002 with the departure of Rare. It hasnt been the same since circa 2000 and Microsofts big purchase backfired, as none of the landmark blockbuster titles it hoped for followed for its Xbox consoles.
Star Fox Adventures has its moments, though, and the game did make for a marked shift away from the traditional Star Fox format of on on-rails space shooting.
As its a standalone experience, we think that says everything you need to know. Nintendo didnt consider a success and wont be pursuing another outing anytime soon.

Midweek Musings: Chapter One.
Welcome dear reader to Midweek Musings. The blog designed to break down the blog.
A smaller blog inside the larger one Blogception, if you will.
I wanted to start this blog as a way of becoming more creative with my writing. I may write a short story, a poem, or just a bit on a random thought I had during the week. In this blog, Ill explore in depth the things I like, the things that make me happy and the things that make me who I am. Ill endeavour to keep up with my posting schedule as much as possible. This is the first chapter an introduction into the person that is me. I do hope you enjoy reading it. I may even add photos and videos along the way
Now that the introduction is out of the way time for this weeks Midweek Musings.
Most of this week has been spent dealing with the dreaded lurgy, which has kept me in bed for several days. Not only was I in the running for Snot Shop of the Year 2026, but I may also have accidentally become the worlds first architect of a goober-infused tissue fort, complete with structural sniffle damage and absolutely no planning permission. Ladies and gentlemen, this lurgy had me dreaming in full technicolour nonsense! One night, everything was green. The next red. Then yellow. Honestly, was I ill, or had my immune system accidentally swallowed a Dulux sample book
My dreams are weird at the best of times but these These were of a entirely different dream beast.
Have you ever dreamt in one colour before What was it like Personally, I found it rather unnerving. I wasnt sure what was going on.
Since Im still not feeling 100% I think Ill leave this blog here for now.
Next weeks musing: The kind of sandwiches I ate as a kid. It should be a hoot!
Cheers !

Alissa was raised to think this way about God, and it ultimately led her to satanism. Psalm 139:7-12 reminds us that there is no place we can go to hide from God and His love for us. He is there.
Alissa learns that, watch now martyria.riverside.com
"In a world organised through hierarchies, where man owed reverence to God and woman to man, female laughter was seen as a threat to that order."
"The fact that womens laughter continues to be more heavily scrutinised today suggests that traces of this medieval vision still remain."

Here's the finale to this year's Summer of Sherlock!
Are you familiar with the three types
Type 1 Fun - Fun in the moment. Remembered as fun
Type 2 Fun - Not fun in the moment, but definitely was fun overall upon reflection.
Type 3 Fun - Not fun in the moment. Will never have been fun no matter how much time passes.
