Over the final weekend of September, we spent a day hiking in and around the beautiful town of . Despite having less than 750 year-round residents, Green Mountain Falls has succeeded in creating a sense of place where much larger cities and towns have failed.

With the help of the , this former railway resort town in the mountains west of Colorado Springs has successfully added several practical and tactical placemaking features.

Perhaps, the most innovative and exciting feature to this retired planner was the inclusion of a Spiritual Platform along the set on the townside slope of Mount Dewey. One might ask, so what

Spiritual Platform on Mount Dewey

Well, it became quite clear during our hike that this scenic and idyllic wayside is an excellent gathering place for residents and visitors alike. The vista alone is worth the hike even it you do not continue on to the summit, but its much more than that this platform provides a visceral and deeply-rooted link between humanity and nature.

Overlooking Green Mountain Falls from the Mount Dewey Trail

One can meditate here to their hearts content amid the vast beauty of the surrounding landscape. Or, one can perform yoga poses in the fresh, clean mountain air alonewith friends, family, a class, or others who simply love being amidst the great outdoors. Its hard not to be inspired by the tranquility and sheer magnificence of nature when you are roughly 8,200+ feet up and encircled by breathtaking beauty.

This platform can easily be employed for other purposes, as well. Personally, Id love to spend time just sitting there and reading a bookor eating lunch amidst Mother Natures finest efforts, as we did last Sunday.

The point isa community doesnt have to blow its budget or build gargantuan features to create great gathering places. All it needs to be is practical and tactical as to how it plans and implements its placemaking efforts.

Summit of 8,464 foot Mount Dewey

Green Mountain Falls has a number of other lovely features, both natural and human made. But, it was this fairly simple mountainside Spiritual Platform placed amid the pines and Gambel Oaks that helped endear us to Green Mountain Falls and which sets the town apart from other communities brimming with hiking trails and natural beauty. When a placemaking feature accomplishes that, its a clear winner. Well done, Green Mountain Falls and the Historic Green Mountain Falls Foundation!
